Title: Speed Optimization and Testing
Cory - March 8, 2008 02:37 AM (GMT)
Speed Optimization TestingYou can help us by testing and submitting the page load speed of Big Board's forum index page on your computer. Please do the test provided and fill out our load time speed survey. Your participation will help us in our efforts to optimize load time for BB users. There have been a wide disparity of page load times reported, and your responses can help us pinpoint the problems.
Please fill out the following template that appears in your "add reply" screen.
Your Speed (In Seconds): Use
this website to determine your speed.
Insert
http://bigboardsresources.com/ into the form.
Your Browser & Version: Your
web browser and version.
How much RAM your computer has: In Windows Vista or XP, click the
Windows key and
Pause Break key at the same time. Alternatively, you can navigate yourself over to the panel in which you can find this information;
Windows Vista how-to,
Windows XP how-to.
Mac how-to.
Type of Connection: Cable, dial-up, direct connection, DSL, ISDN, T1, or wireless.
As an example, my survey response would be:
Your Speed (In Seconds): 3.255
Your Browser & Version: Firefox 2.0
How much RAM your computer has: 894 MB
Type of Connection: DSL
Speed Optimization for Better Response TimeResourcesUser End Tips- Don't have too many windows/tabs up at once (browser option).

- If image viewing exceedingly slows down the page, disable image viewing (browser option) or disable viewing of avatars and signatures (board option).
- Use quick edit (board option).
- View Big Boards in archive mode (board option).
- Set fast reply to open automatically (board option).

For some reason, my computer does not like BB's index page.

It is the slowest loading page of any site I visit. Most other sites load for me in 3-5 seconds, 15 seconds at the most.
Seems to be a continuation of the IF curse on me that prevents me from using Mwr's MOT code or the portal on forum page code. :P
Had to vote for "It's very slow" :(

OK...so the consensus is that I need a new computer....If I put a "buy me a new computer" donate button in my signature, who will volunteer to send me money? :D

Not me!
I'm very satisfied with the loading speed, although I can't give an exact speed, nor my internet connection and speed, because I don't know what they are <_>
I'd say the loading speed is about 3-4 seconds.. With Mozilla Firefox 2.0

Mine loads in about 2seconds now :) Very happy with this.
HelenaZF - April 13, 2008 02:17 AM (GMT)
Within this past week, we've removed quite a bit of JS that was slowing loading time, so the board should be loading faster now.
Cory is exploring some ways to compress the JS and defer loading on some codes, so if any of that is successful, we may be able to restore some of them.

I know this thread is for the board creation time , but can someone please ahve a look at how long it takes to open a page?
It's taking up to 2 minutes for me to open a thread to post.
I'd say that pretty slow
Cory - August 24, 2008 03:18 PM (GMT)
The slowness of the showtopic page is mainly caused by the credit code. If you access the showtopic page in IE, it will have to fully calculate every members credits in order to load, while on Firefox and other browsers it will load the page fully while calculating that data.
The showtopic page will likely load more smoothly once our new hosting plans are sorted out.

a way to do that is to get rid of all unecessary spaces...
it won't help that much, but, it can help...
as well as removing comments...

How much RAM your computer has: 128 MB
Type of Connection: AOL Dial-Up

also, you might want to add in how many mega/giga-hertz their computer has...
as that can greatly effect the speed of loading up web pages as well...
so can what kind of Modem they have...
like, the normal is 56K, but it can go up into the thousands...

That's useless and doesn't matter that much to even make a difference.

Edit: It get's pretty slow sometimes. Once I've waited for like 6-7 seconds. :/
It's probably because of the credit code though.
slayer766 - August 25, 2008 03:28 PM (GMT)
Wow...only 6-7 seconds? lol...that's not slow at all, well maybe for your connection and computer but that really isn't that slow, and wow 6GB of RAM.... :O
Neo D. - August 25, 2008 05:54 PM (GMT)
Im very satisfied
BB Loads Instantly for me ;)
Jjciantar - August 27, 2008 09:24 PM (GMT)
Yeah, my computer is pretty high-tech, but still. BB loads half way, then takes 3-4 seconds to load the other half. >.< The content always loads fine first, the rest takes ages to load, even when I'm just on the main page.
Sometimes it's fast though.
Justin - August 30, 2008 12:17 AM (GMT)
The board has sped up so much more now, it used to take roughly 30seconds, now it only takes a few.

Edit: just tried it on FF3 and it's 1.5 seconds. I thought FF3 was supposed to be speeded up? hmmmm.
OK further set-up, and now I've even got all my graphic programs downloaded and 16 extensions installed, and times are:
.5 seconds for the index and .8 for the topic page. Not too shabby. :D
