Title: Most rediculous thing you have seen on a forum?
madgal - June 6, 2008 02:48 PM (GMT)
For me it was either
a) not allowed to have a siggy button until I had 100 posts. (Talk about a hike!)
b) Being made an admin for joining.
HelenaZF - June 6, 2008 03:05 PM (GMT)
On other forums?
Not being allowed on one forum to edit my profile, sig or avatar until I had achieved certain posting numbers for each. That;s just rude, It gives the impression that some junior Hitler is sitting in the admin seat.
On my own forum?
When Elton John and Almighty God signed up. :D (did I mention that Jesus is a member here at Big Boards?)
theking111 - June 6, 2008 04:25 PM (GMT)
people arguing over little things all the time and not being able to make requests for something until post count is fulfilled.
wissaboo - June 6, 2008 06:18 PM (GMT)
I belong to a forum where every warning can be challenged and it drags on and on and on people nitpicking every tiny little post and deciding if it crossed some imaginary line or not. It's insane. And there are a couple people who do nothing but bait each other till one gets a warning. Then they nitpick and criticize every single little moderation attempt while at the same time complaining about them not moderating enough.
It's the only reason I go there. To watch the drama. So maybe it isn't such a bad thing.
HelenaZF - June 6, 2008 06:31 PM (GMT)
drama can be good.....especially if one is not caught up in it themselves. :D
I was on a forum once where people would get offended about something and then start PM sniping campaigns until they drove the offending person away. The person would post the PMs and everyone would get outraged. Then the instigators would congratulate themselves that "the troublemakers were gone".
It was sick, but entertaining.

It is my theory that we all turn into 14 year olds on the internet.
no offense to actuall 14 year olds.
wissaboo - June 7, 2008 02:21 PM (GMT)
another thing I"ve seen that drives me nuts is support boards where you have to a certain number of posts before asking for support. If I can't ask about the topic of the board what am I supposed to post about?

| Most ridiculous thing you have seen on a forum? |
Several years ago, and after Hurricane Katrina, I briefly browsed through a Yahoo discussion forum that was rampant with profanity and racial epithets. The language used between, presumably white and black individuals in one particular topic, was especially vile and hateful. There was, as far as I could tell, absolutely no attempt by anyone to moderate any of the topics. :(

Any board that makes you register just to see the forums. That's ridiculous.
I'd never join a board like that.
Klea - June 8, 2008 09:55 PM (GMT)
For me, the most ridiculous thing is not being allowed an avatar, sig of any kind, or even to know your post count -- period. There are NO smileys, and most of the code buttons have been disabled (thank goodness I know how to type bb codes). I don't even go to that forum unless I want to post, because I can read the posts in my email subscriptions instead -- and don't have to go to the effort of uncovering the spoiler bars.
In defense of forums that ask people to register first: sometimes there are reasons for that. The community either prefers privacy, or there are security concerns.
And feuds are not entertaining. They're just childish and petty. I had to take one of my forums offline because no matter what solutions I tried -- even banning or suspending the offenders -- the rest of the "gang" just would not shut up. So in essence I finally kicked everybody out and told them to take their fight elsewhere. Now they accuse me of "killing" the forum. :furious:
HelenaZF - June 9, 2008 12:35 AM (GMT)
Klea, you make a good point about the entertainment value of forum feuds. It is definitely a different story when coming from the perspective of being an admin of a forum where this goes on.
As an onlooker, though....sometimes you just feel compelled to watch---kind of like a gawker at a train wreck.

Rediculous things?
Let's see...a guy pretended to have a girlfriend.
A guy made suicide notes if he wasn't banned from a forum and then begged to be let back in.
User said he would get his parents to sue another user if he reported him haha.
I've seen my share of rediculous things.
But if you don't mean that type of rediculous things then, I recently joined a board that overused the word filters.
HelenaZF - June 9, 2008 02:07 AM (GMT)
really? what did they filter out that was excessive?
(Now I'm wondering if the answer will get through our word filters  )
Addicted - June 9, 2008 02:10 AM (GMT)
Well, I didn't know damn was a bad word. Or darn...
*waits to see if that makes it through these word filters.*

this

theking111 - June 9, 2008 02:36 PM (GMT)
Nice finding, wissa

Having like 10 or more people as staff on the forum, but none of the staff are active.
Admins abusing their powers by banning people for having an opinion.
Klea - June 13, 2008 11:06 AM (GMT)
Do you mean a harmless opinion? There are some opinions that are best left unsaid, if they are based on lies, are meant to be harmful to other forum members, if they reveal confidential information, or otherwise violate forum rules. A lot of the time it depends on how something is said, not the basic opinion itself.
The latest ridiculous thing I saw on a forum was in a thread about celebrity crushes. One person posted photos that -- I am not kidding -- are much larger than my monitor screen. Considering one photo was of Oprah, that photo must have been a screen and a half in size! :O
celestialxhaze - July 18, 2008 05:12 AM (GMT)
Hmm...so many things but I think the most ridiculous thing I can remember is...
An admin making advertising for the site on other sites mandatory because of lack of activity and then threatening with account warnings to those who didn't within an 11 day period of the starting post.
Pure - July 20, 2008 12:53 PM (GMT)
hm I guess when I was member on a board and was an admin there after some time, and I wasn't allowed to be an admin after the board got hacked cause the super-admin there found out I also posted on other forums. So basically that was the reason why I wasn't allowed to be an admin there anymore.
Eternal. - July 21, 2008 07:49 AM (GMT)
admins that doesn't share stuff with their members !!!
stevie-ann - September 25, 2008 08:29 PM (GMT)
Being made a moderator, just for posting :D
Black Angel - October 4, 2008 10:31 AM (GMT)
An admin threatening to ban the members from the forum if they didn't email him swearing to be active, while threatening to send them emails even though they are banned so they can't unsubscribe or remove their information from the forum.
