I used to run a short story competition on one forum. The format was similar to the Iron Chef TV show. The contestants had 48 hours to write a 750-word short story, and the story had to incorporate a mystery theme that the contestants would not be told about until the beginning of the 48 hours. I was a contestant before becoming the host, and two of the stories I wrote had to incorporate the themes of "nothing" and "cabbage."
It's actually quite a challenge to come up with a story about nothing. :)

I have tried a few posting and referral competitions(though not recently). I offered some CDs and/or DVDs as rewards. There has never been much interest in them at my site.

Well those are good rewards for winning lol. I just give out awards. And the interest in them has decreased in my board =\

My competition ideas are always too adventerous. I never get enough support to make them work coz they're so cerazzzzzzzzzy!

One of the key components of a good competition is finding out what sort of rewards the contestants enjoy. I live in Canada, so offering tangible prizes isn't really doable.
However, one of the things everybody enjoys is public recognition. Something as simple as publicly recognizing and praising the person who posts the 20,000th post on the board is fun for the members, appreciated by the person recognized, and something I take pleasure in being able to do. It's fun for me to watch the board around each 1000-post mark to see who will be the next person I get to make a fuss over. :)
Offering privileges such as custom graphics or special avatars/sigs is also something that appeals to people as prizes.
