There is absolutely nothing wrong with using brushes, anything who says otherwise should get his head examined.
I've seen this behaviour on alot of boards, most of them seem to forget how they started themselves....yep you guessed it using brushes.

So if you want to brush Justin, brush away.

Okay end of my rant.

Unitl I started to understand and learn how to use the plugins and filters on my editor, I used brushes for everything. However, I don't see them as something you use and then abandon for something more "advanced". They are just fhe first tools I learned. and I continue to use them. I just downloaded a set of PS light effect brushes that I am experimenting with now. Very cool. I haven't tried making my own brushes yet, but that's something on my to-do list. :)

I wasn't aware that there was a snobbish attitude about brushes that was prevalent in the graphics community.

Well since I can't run the latest version of GIMP (which has adjustable size brushes) , I want to make a sizeable brush to use, so that will be my first brush creation project.

How exactly to you make a brush? Do you make it in a graphics program then save it as a gimp brush file in gimp?

I use brushes alot actually when creating my graphics.I find nothing wrong with using them because I find they can help improve the looks of graphics at times.

I've always been one of those snobby, "I hate brushes" type of people. However, I've gotten over it and I now use them whenever I feel like I'd be wasting my time if I went to make my own version of a, say, splatter brush.

I don't use brushes that often unless I want to use them to get cooler smudge effects. I love the smudge tool XD
Best board ever, if you're a random fun person. IMO

Clipping Masks or Smudging is mainly what i use them for. I do use the occasional one as a feature in a piece but i feel that you can't get exactly what you want by using something already pre-made. I also think that it's not as unique if you're using something that hundreds of people will be using too.

I'm not knocking brushes, they're handy little things. They're just not something i use much, out of personal choice.
