For me, it was being frustrated with the limitations of the online graphic editors like FlamingText.com, CoolText.com, and SnipShot.com They are good tools, and Snipshot is especially good for croping and enhancing pix quickly. I tried to use them to make logos and buttons for my board, but found them too limiting on what you could do.
I later found that you can do quite a bit with them if you already have some skill at using a graphics editing program...but that's a nice catch 22. :) --since if you can do that, you don't really need them.

It was at that point that I took a suggestion to download the free GIMP ( I think it was version 2.2 at the time) graphic editor program, and that's what I've been using ever since.

'forever.

I decided to do graphics when I joined Big Boards, shortly after joining I noticed all the graphics and coding challenges. (originally I joined hoping to learn more about coding and whatnot) But in the end I ended up converting to graphics designing for a little something to do.

I've never really been interested in designing board themes or anything major like that but i've always wanted some cool signatures / avatars / banners etc and there just aren't that many people out there willing to keep making your requests so i decided i'd get off my buttocks and start making my own. I guess i'll keep learning and moving on to bigger and better things and themes will probably be attempted some day.

Plus, i love bragging when i make something i really like :P

A friend of my dads thought I should start doing graphics so he fixed photoshop for me. I thought it was fun so I continued ^_^
Best board ever, if you're a random fun person. IMO

When I started running my own forum. I wanted to have my own custom skin so I decided to learn photoshop and design my own skin. It was fun though as I got to learn something new ;)

Well one of my brothers got Photoshop CS when it first came out and I just decided to start using it because I wanted to learn something new. Ever since then I have been making graphics and themes. :D

I started doing my own graphics when I began running my own forum too. Before then, I did a few minor things with "Paint" and eventually GIMP. At the beginning I was still mainly using online generators (which as you mention are limited). However, it was very important to me to learn the ins and outs to styling themes for Zeta as a means of being able to troubleshoot my own board, and I just wanted themes that were specific to my board (not in use on thousands of others). I still use the occasional pre-made graphic, but I try to create as many as I can.

Thank goodness for GIMP.

Aside from me being tired of having to request countless graphics from people (which can get annoying and limits me to what I'm capable of doing) I really got into graphics when Helena pushed me to give it a try when she say me posting up a bunch of crappy images i created using paint.xDD

I used to get wrestling covers from a website I would visit, but one day it closed down randomly. Unable to find anywhere else at the time, I started making my own covers with Paint. Eventually, my grandad bought Photoshop for himself and asked me if I wanted it, and so I got that and started making things with that, which at first was covers but then quickly expanded into sigs and whatever else came to mind.

I might have still got into it from my grandad offering me Photoshop, but it would depend on whether or not I'd actually have then been interested in such a thing.
