Good question. I'm just thinking if you have a strong concept ready and a knowledge of editing files and installing mods. If you just have the funds to buy vBulletin I would watch out. You need to pay for skins, domains , hosting, ... But vBulletin is great though.

I can edit files, add mods and I have the funds to pay for everything needed. You have to pay for skins? I'll probably stick by InvisionFree until I understand a lot more about vBulletin. Thanks, Ryan. |

You can always try the demo of vBulletin. Decent skins cost money (10-50$)

If you are willing to pay that much for forum software, I'd go for IPB 2.3 or 3 (when version 3 comes out). Unlike vBullitin where the prices keep rising, IPB prices stay the same. It's the only paid software that I'd ever use.

vBulletin is really good software, but only if you're willing to actually devote time to it. I would establish your forum on something free (like phpBB or myBB) then convert to vBulletin when the time is right.

I think phpBB is better option option as its opensource and there are lot many comms from where you can get free support apart from that i think vbulletin is good if there are lot many users when come on at same time... and best part of phpBB... its free na ![]() Demo : free forums |

I'd have to agree with Wrath of the Gods. Invision Board is the only way to go. If you have never checked them out you should. Especially if your willing to pay for it. I would only recommend that you go with your own hosting and do not get a "hosted community" from them. The code is encrypted if they host it and puts some limit on modifying your forum. Other than that, nothing compares to Invision Power. |

I would say go with SMF. If you don't like the look, you have the option to change ANYTHING, as it's completely open source, security enhanced, has a boat load of features(Not to mention the add-on modules), and it's free. |

This does sound alot better I've always been wanting to change over to vBullitin but never had much information on how it all goes off. I would of been great if it was just pay for the forum and get themes for free but that's not the case.. but it's not much of a problem.

You even have to pay for the themes on vB as well? Sounds like Microsoft...put a price on anything and everything.

It's not confusing at all, SMF has an automatic installer. You just need to upload all the files.

Don't forget apple. They make you pay for updates and insurances too! I would go for IBP, or just stick with ZB. The only difference I can find now a days is that ZB doesn't allow you to host it on your servers. |

You can just make your own theme. Like ZB. Apparently making themes was difficult with vB, but not with the new vB4.0.
Only when changing from 4.0 to 5.0, etc. All updates in the 4 series are free. Edited by Jeremy, Dec 7 2009, 01:01 AM.

I would buy IPB3 if I were to pay for a forum software, personally.
