If/When The World Will End

Well, this topic has come up in many places, and I've actually decided to do a persuasive speech on it for English (the only one doing a persuasive speech, the rest slacked off to do group debates).

Between the years 30 CE and 1990 CE, there had been 63 failed & 1 ambiguous end-of-the-world predictions. For information on these predictions, you can visit this website.

Well, what do you guys think about the world ending? Before you answer, I'm going to list the two latest theories on the end of the world (or similar occurrences).

  • The world was predicted to end the moment it hit the year 2000, the start of a new millennium. Of course you may be able to tell that it hasn't, but due to the occurrence of this event, a group of roughly 100 Christians all injected some kind of fluid into each other, basically killing themselves the moment the year 2000 arrived.
  • The end of the Maya Calendar (December 21, 2012) is also another date which the world has been predicted to end. There are also many other theories on what is to happen on this date, not all of them relating to the end of the world, but these theories are:

    • The New Age theory, which Author Daniel Pinchbeck suggests will bring an advancement of DNA, which will take the human kind to a higher level, which he concluded with:
When the 'heavens open' and cosmic energy is allowed to flow throughout our tiny Planet, will we be raised to a higher level by the vibrations.
    • The galactic alignment theory, which a lot of scientific theories go into, suggesting the axis of the earth, and also the orbit of all planets and the sun will align. John Major Jenkins suggests that the Mayans based their calendar on observations of the "dark rift" which is a band of black dust clouds in the Milky Way. New Age proponents of the galactic alignment theory argue that, just as astrology uses the positions of stars and planets to predict the future, the Mayans plotted their calendars with the objective of preparing for significant world events.
    • The timewave zero theory, is a mathematical formula that purports to calculate the ebb and flow of novelt", which is defined as increase in the universe's interconnectedness, or organized complexity, over time. This theory is by far the most complex.

The three theories above, show some sort of proof that the Maya calendar does not signify the end of the world.

    • The end of the world theory, which predicts a polar shift which will produce a solar flare, which has energy equal to that of atomic bombs. The proof that this may signify the occurrence of this event, is supporting by evidence of the Earth's magnetic field weakening.
Another event, which is similar to this, also predicted to occur in the year 2012, is that Earth will collide with large planet, Nibiru. Astronomers say that this event can't be true, because if it was we would be able to see it when looking into the night sky.

* - Most of the previous information comes from the top of my head, so it may not be completely accurate, even with that said, some information may still not be correct.

Your opinions and views on either the two latest theories? Or other end-of-the-world predictions?

My belief for the end of the world tells me that it doesn't matter when it does, so I don't try to guess - because it's honestly not my place. I know some of the events that will occur when it does, and that if the world 'ends' (is destroyed might be a better term for me there, because there will be a new Heaven and a new Earth once the current one is done away with... anyhow...) When all that happens, supposing I'm still alive, I know I'll be safe and that I'll be happy as ever... so ya, for me it's just an issue of waiting for things and not caring when they happen because I know whenever they do it'll be perfect timing. ;)

And if the world does 'end', it'll happen too fast for us to notice.

I agree. Though if god were merciless, I pray for the day not to come...and yeah I've heard about the 2012 date, in December 2012 something is going to happen, I can't remember what though... *scratches head*

Yeah, December 21st 2012.

The 2012 thing is silly. I've read some of the explanations that go like this: "In December 2012, the sun, the Earth, and the centre of the universe will be in perfect alignment." Oh? Realllyyy? You mean like they are every year around that time?
Kind of makes me scratch my head, too, at how little thought some people put into what they believe. :( Not that the world couldn't end then. It could end at any time at all, but the reasoning some people try to give for it all makes me  .

No Justin, that's not what I heard will happen in 2012.

Yeah Nicolas, the alignment thing means absolutely nothing....the people who say something will happen on that day have watched Hercules too many times.

I heard something about the north and south poles moving too far away from each other. Then the ozone layer will disappear, meaning the earth will have be exposed to the atmosphere and stuff.

I think humans will be gone before the world is. And I think it's pretty obvious that the human race is going to fall prey to a zombie uprising.

Yeah, I agree with your first part Morgan. Although, the zombie uprising doesn't sound believable, but that'd be pretty awesome :D

The poles are on opposite sides of the earth. If either one shifts even slightly the other one shifts equally in the opposite direction. Now, supposing that weren't true and one pole could move independent of the other, than they can only get close to each other. They're as far apart as they can get.

Now, in the past, Earth's magnetic field has had a history of weakening for a little it, then entirely flipping itself about so that magnetic north is actually due south. This process takes thousands of years, of course, but the Earth is known to do it from what scientists have discovered studying metals and ions inside certain rocks/ice cores/what have you. So that could be some sort of twisted version of that idea? I don't know. I just know that people come up with pretty random theories.

I think if I could spend my last days braining zombies, I wouldn't even care that the entire human race was being terminated.

I don't see how a calendar missing some dates means the end of the world myself. The alignment one sounds more reasonable, but if the world ends so be it. Not like we can do anything.

OMG if there were zombies that would be awesome. Until the day one of them gets me while I'm slaying other zombies.
