I own a small ANimal crossing (Nintindo game) It's only four months old but its growing very very fast, But that growth has called some unwanted attion. The forum keeps getting spammed and the keep posting bad pics (and the forum is for a childrens games). The spammers and other bad people are coming from one of Zeta's largest Gaming Boards which has the same topic of mine. They are mad because i have been beating them in topsites and alot of there members are coming to mine. But it's not just this one forum. THere are 2 year old forums (but smaller than my 4 month old forum) that are doing the same thing. They say that they will keep on untill i shut the forum down. I turned on admin account approval. But now i can't tell the good from the bad. Its causing me alot of distress and EAC is taking up all my time. so, Admins of other forums, Should i shut EAC down, if not what should i do?

They are trying to intimidate you. Shutting your forum down will just prove that they succeeded. They are in the wrong, therefore you can do some intimidation of your own. I would post a very prominent warning that you will report the posters of "bad pics" (I assume these are porn-type or violent pics in violation of the TOS) and that the forum they came from could possibly be closed because of their actions. Then collect some evidence and report them. In the meantime, there is little you can do but clean up the mess, ban the offenders, and explain to your members what is going on. You may be able to use the IP identification features in the ACP to find out if some people are re-registering after being banned. If it becomes unbearable, you might benefit by disabling new registrations for a period of time. But I would not shut down the board. |

if you can find a posting at these other boards planning to spam your board you could report them to zeta. They could lose thier boards. is it possible to disable the image tags helena? |

Disabling image tags is something that has never been successful on IF boards, I haven't seen anything in ZB that would allow you to do it from the ACP. Using a script is ineffective, because that can be easily bypassed. The only thing you can really do is not allow guests to see posted images, and that won't help in this case.

Section 3.1 of ZetaBoards terms of service prohibits spam on boards, Section 12 of the Terms of Service prohibits sending out spam messages promoting your board. Section 3.1 of the ZetaBoards terms of use prohibit users from posting spam, (which all users agree to upon registration on any ZB forum). ToS, ToU So, are the other boards advertising their board via the spam on your forum? If they are maliciously attacking your forum, and it's the administrators that are knowledgeable of it/supporting it/promoting it, you can report their forum with as much information as you have. They may then be contacted to call off the spam attacks/cease supporting those doing it, etc. Spam ToS violation reports are taken seriously and boards have been shut down for spamming other forums about their board in the past. So, that's your best course of action. Otherwise, don't close your forum - that'll have them win. ![]() Everything everybody else has suggested to you is valid. ![]() |

I'd report them, and to keep evidence, rather than delete the posts you could just hide them all in another area, so that the evidence is there to prove it happened, rather than petty crap of "Waa you edited a screenshot", since the posts would have IP's, etc. Anything that shows them in the wrong, keep evidence of it, then report them. Just ensure your members don't dare try to fight fire with fire by retaliating in the same way, or it'll cause you to get into deep water with ZB possibly.

thanks. No the other boards admins are not ''funding'' the spam. My members arn't listening spamming back and forth. I am saving the post but some are delted becasue at the rate they are coming we can'tefficently keep up with them. we had a member today spamming. not bad but still. I think i found a syste that works but it's not perfect yet. I stated it yesterday and only one out of spam accounts got thru.

If the other Admin's aren't funding it, contact them to step in on their own member base. It's their members, so if they don't agree with it, they should help stop it. You don't like it, they probably don't, so hopefully it'll work out.

I don't know how he could do that unless he was a mod or created the themes. in some ways this will be good for the sense of community on your board though look on the bright side.

My 2 cents . . . 1. Do not shut down your site simply due to some bad participants. As stated, that will only give them that warm and fuzzy feeling they were seeking all along. 2. Do the IP check of the offending user(s) and ban it. 3. As stated, make an announcement that there is an issue happening with some bad people but that you are addressing it. Bring your other active members "into the fold", thus creating a "team" against this type of action/people. 4. Do not respond to any topics/posts from these bad people. Simply delete em. Silence is golden and when there isn't any response from you, they will eventually grow tired and move on. 5. Ensure anyone that has administrator control panel access immediately changes their password. Good luck, hope it helps. Remember, with proxies it's hard to actually ban someone, but like I said, if you don't publicly respond they will move eventually. |

I actually wrote a css based image hiding script, which actually hides the images before the page loads as opposed to javascript, and clicking the replacement image would show the images again. It allowed smilies by default as well as let admins add other trusted sites. I think I even added an auto enable for trusted user groups as well. But that was quite a while ago, not sure if I still have it laying around somewhere. But it seems images aren't your primary concern are they. Because they aren't bots eventually they will tire, and the best thing you can do as has been said is just to not reply, delete the posts, and ip ban them. Even if they use proxies, if you keep banning those they will simply run out of options and tire and move on. This type of behavior on their part is very disappointing to see still

You should do as Nicolas said and report their board if needed. If their board administrators don't personally do something about the situation then they are basically allowing it, which could result in their board being terminated. If all else fails, ban their IPs, unless they are starting to use proxies then it should solve your problem. Otherwise, get more Mods on your boards to ban them as they come, maybe even put precautions for new members and such. This should be easy to avoid if you take the correct measures. |

Patience and determination will pay off in the end. Personally, i'd refrain from hiring any new staff to deal with the issue - you never know who you'll be hiring when attacks are happening. Also, you've done the right things so far. Moderation que might be a pain in the buttocks but if it stops the spam then it's worth every second. Finally, don't trust anyone right now. I know that probably sounds ludicrous but, honestly, trust me. Let users prove themselves for weeks/months before you even consider giving them any kind of power. The deletion of your themes proves this. Whilst it's a terrible thing to happen, at least now you know and can learn from the mistakes. Keep up the silent defence and you'll win eventually. |
